31.03.2010 - Ceremony Marks Start Of Building Work For Medical Centre In Scartho

A major milestone in the development of the new medical centre for Scartho was reached on Thursday, March 25, with the official ceremony to mark the start of building work on site, hosted by developer One Medical Ltd.

Plans for the new integrated primary care centre on Springfield Road were given the go ahead last year by North East Lincolnshire planning department and North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus. Work started in November, including the demolition of Scartho community centre, which as part of the plans will be rebuilt to provide a state of the art facility for the people of Scartho.

The new Scartho Medical Centre is due for completion in winter 2010 and will replace the outdated and undersized existing practice building on Waltham Road. The new centre will provide space for increased services such as CTP community and mental health teams and an onsite pharmacy. The completion of the new community centre will follow in the summer of 2011.

Dr Paul Twomey a doctor at Scartho Medical Centre said: "It is marvellous to see work beginning on site and we are very excited about watching the building take shape. Moving to the new surgery will allow the Practice to continue to provide high levels of care to our patients whilst increasing the additional services we are able to offer.

"As a practice we are pleased that the new centre remains within Scartho enabling the practice team to continue to support the local community and we are grateful for all of the support that has enabled the project to become a reality. This includes the local Counsellors, our patient group, One Medical and the invaluable contribution of North East Lincs Care Trust Plus."

Jane Lewington, chief executive of the Care Trust Plus, said: "The 10-year Care Trust Plus estates strategy, which is now in its final stages, has transformed primary care premises throughout North East Lincolnshire. Scartho Medical Centre is one of three more new centres that will be delivered in the next 18 months including Laceby Road Medical Centre also being developed by One Medical.

"This new centre will house new and improved facilities for patients and staff and through collaboration with other service providers, provide a wider range of services for its patients."

The new 2780m² centre will incorporate over 25 treatment and consulting rooms as well as a minor surgery suite and a training and resource facility. Dedicated on site parking will serve the new centre. The community centre will include a multi-purpose hall, two large meeting rooms and on site showers as well as a community cafe area.

Rachel Beverley-Stevenson, chief executive of One Medical, added: "The team have worked very hard to get the development to this stage and during that process we have been really pleased with the support from the local community. The centre is going to be a huge asset to the local people and we are excited to be able to provide a building that Scartho can be proud of."
